Getting Stronger and Stronger!! ha ha
(Monday September 29, 2008) Written by Mason
Hey don't tell anyone, but I'm at my overnight gas station job, it's about 2:27am and I have no customers! I think (besides the manager) that I'm the only one here who even knows how to access the internet. Trust me it's tricky! ha ha Well after my debachle in Rapid City in May (which was the reason I left Maverick 105) I ended up back in Bismarck. I picked up this gas station job and patiently waited for something to pop open. Thankfully something did. I was able to get in on Supertalk 1270 as a board-op for some hockey and football games. That eventually turned into me getting back on the air with my previous station, Hot 975. But let's rewind back to May 2008. The next day after arriving back in Bismarck I went on All Access to see what was available for gigs. Oddly enough, I saw a post of a christian radio station in Brockton, MA that was looking for a show that played hiphop music. So I sent him some stuff about Clubhouse Party (Which is a christian CHR program that I had been doing on and off since April 2002 - however it was officially named Clubhouse Party in January of 2006)   www.myspace.com/clubhouseparty Not joking, it didn't take more than 5 minutes for me to get a phone call back from this guy, and we ended up talking for over 40 minutes. He liked the concept of my show based on what we had talked about over the phone. He decided to add it to his station without even hearing a single audio clip! (not even a sweeper lol) They added the show to it's saturday night line up......2 weeks later CHP was picked up by a mainstream alternative rock station in Morristown, NJ.....2 weeks after that, I got a phone call from the PD in Brockton, MA. He said that the show had been maxing out there "listen online" channels, so they were making a move to air the program 7 days per week! Over the month of September, I did alot of re-imaging, hired some voice guys and gals and now come October 1st CHP is ALL NEW! It's coming out bigger and better than ever! 1st show in October I interview Josh from The Afters and I've contacted management for potential interviews with John Cooper from Skillet, Jeremy Camp, and the band "Red" We also are now streaming each week's program 24/7 - 365 on the CHP myspace profile. Starting now you'll be able to listen to ANY episode of CHP at ANY time! That's so cool! You have no idea. I'm so pumped about this! It's a very cool thing to happen to me! If you think you'd be interested in picking up CHP on your station. All the contact information and un-official show information (which is basically the same as the official version lol) is located on the Blog on the CHP myspace profile! Check it out! www.myspace.com/clubhouseparty Later Friends Mike

Working in the Trenches....
(Monday February 04, 2008) Written by BStephens989
A lot of times people, aka other jocks, will look at me like..."dude, you're in market 2 hundred whatever". Well, here's the thing about market "two hundred whatever"...it's more work than you could ever imagine AND the sky's the limit with possibilities. I may be a small market jock, but that doesn't mean I think of myself as a small market jock. I have more remotes than I can imagine, I get to go to all the best concerts AND I have a great show! Sure large market stations pay big bucks for their remotes, but really...how many remotes do you hear from Large Market Jocks? Not near as many as small markets. See small markets know that if you want to win, you have to win in the streets AND in the halls! We may have minimal promotional budgets and no we don't have a Custom Motorcoach with our logo plastered on it for that ONE festival appearance a year, but we do have relatability with our local content, we have compassion for radio and life in general and we may care about numbers...ratings...marketsize...payroll...but they don't define who we are. The only downside to being a small market jock? It can be overwhelming. It can be downright exhausting. But at the end of the day when you are staring at a stage with one of your hottest artists and looking at the hordes of your listeners having the time of their life and it's all on a minimal budget...it all seems worth it. No matter what size your market is...there will always be pro's and con's...the question is whether or not you are the Dedicated, Passionate Pro.

Switching Stations!
(Monday January 14, 2008) Written by Mason
Starting January 23rd I will be officially the new assistant program director and host of the Maverick 105 Wild Night Show with Mike Mason! I'm creating a myspace for it later today! LOL I'm pretty excitied about this oppurtunity, considering that I am moving to a smaller town. The city I live in now is close to 100,000 people. My new home will have a population of 2,400 people, not quite the move I was expecting, but as long as I get to put something entertaining on the air and learn more. Then I'm all for it! Wish me luck! I'll keep you posted on how it goes over the first couple weeks!

Merry Christmas
(Tuesday December 25, 2007) Written by Mason
Well just to update you all from my previous blog back on October 7th! I spent christmas today alone with my mom. Also got a text message from my dad! So that put a smile on my face! My marriage is still on the rocks! I've been fighting so hard for so long and it's just not looking good. But I'm not crying anymore (well I take that back actually) I cried a couple days ago! I've come to the decision that I"m just going to let her go, and if she comes back, then great! If not, then I suppose it's for the best! However in the meantime I'm just going to be my own person and do my own thing. I'm not going to be controlled by a marriage that isn't working. It's too much of an emotional strain on me! I had a phone interview back in early December for a full time gig in Duluth. Which is crazy because just a couple hours prior to that phone call, I got another phone call for a possible part time gig in Fargo. Well I decided to put the Fargo gig on hold, until I know what's up with Duluth. I've been told that I was in his top 2 and should have another phone interview shortly after christmas! But I've been keeping my options and connections alive. Moving for part time might seem crazy to those who are not in radio. But it does pay more and provides a few more hours than my current part time gig! Plus lets face it I had a blast last time I was in Fargo. Would love to take that! So that's me! Oh and also check out my myspace page for the audio from April 2005 when I was on coast to coast AM with George Noory! After a million years I finally got the ambition to put it together and post it! LOL Merry Christmas to every one of you! Hope you got some awesome presents and if I don't blog you by New Years then don't do anything that is more crazy than what I might end up doing! LOL

Podcast Ideas
(Friday December 21, 2007) Written by wgnicholsjr
What's shakin peeps. My station is big into podcasting, and I'm pretty much the only jock here that doesn't have a podcast. So, what I'm asking, is some good ideas for a podcast, that doesn't have anything to do with celebrity gossip. I've thought about talking about upcoming artists, new music, live events coming up in the local area (Charlotte, NC), and reviews of local live events. What y'all think?

Be The Star Player.
(Tuesday November 20, 2007) Written by bmac
There is a radio station based in the city I live in that isn’t a great ratings performer. Each book that comes out they have either held their lowly position or gone down slightly. It’s a little sad to see because it is a station with great potential. They just seem happy to plod along and maintain their current status. I have been listening to them on and off for the past week trying to figure out what it is that isn’t working for them. The list is long. The music is wrong, the focus is wrong and their overall image is disconnected. However, that’s not what interests me. I pay special attention to the presenters. Even with a poorly focussed product, a good presenter can pull decent ratings out of the fire. But in order to do this, they need goals. They need direction. It’s obvious, listening to this station, that they get none of these. Today I listened for one-hour non-stop. I ended up shouting at my radio (I can get a bit passionate about bad/good presentation)! ‘Stop talking’, I cried. ‘For the love of God, quit talking now’!! I’ll give you an example of what I was listening to and why I got a little carried away. Let’s say the station is an Oldies format. Just for argument’s sake. And let’s say I was listening to the afternoon drive presenter. The first thing that drove me crazy was the amount of crutches he used. “A very good afternoon to you” “Hope all is well in your world” “How is your Friday afternoon going for you” “The weather is awful out there today”, that sort of thing. Next was the biggest crutch of all: the time check. It was great to know that it was “5:15” and then”5:21” and then”5:25” and let’s not forget “5:31”. I would never have thought to look at my watch if I needed to know the exact time (every five minutes)! Then there was the needless back sell. An example being, “That was Elvis Presley there”, (no kidding). This was followed by more needless back selling that told us nothing, moved the station no where and sounded like the presenter was speaking just for the sake of it (which he was). The biggest crime I heard, however, was two fold. In this one particular link, the presenter proceeded to do a piece about Lindsay Lohan, the actress. This could be a fine piece of showbiz fluff. However, let’s remember the format here. We’re talking Oldies. We’re concentrating on an audience that enjoys that style of music and the people that went along with it. Is Lindsay Lohan someone that an Oldies audience will relate to? In my opinion, no. To me, it’s like working on a Country format and doing a major piece of 50 Cent, What is the point? Well, you say, she’s a big star. That’s true. Sometimes big stars are worth the mention. That could come down to you making a programming decision on that one yourself. I only give my opinion on that. However, the Lindsay Lohan piece lasted a full two minutes and twenty three seconds, (yes, I did time it. Pathetic, I know)! That’s a lot of time on one idea. On a music station. The killer for me, though, was the fact that the presenter was reading it. Out of a magazine. A magazine that I had read last week. I remember the article. I remember sitting down and reading the very same article. Word for word. He was reading something to me that I had read for myself one week ago. Why did he do this? He did this because no more is expected of him. The station’s standards are low. Their expectations are low. Their level of commitment is low. Their basic requirements are low. Their feed back to the presenters is low. They really sound as if they don’t care. Why should he put any extra effort into his link if he doesn’t feel the need? The PD won’t say anything. The GM won’t notice. Why bother? The very fact that it ‘sounds’ as though he his presenting is enough for him. By reading an article, he is giving the listener nothing. If you are going to present a piece on Lindsay Lohan, wouldn’t it be better to put it into your own words? Put your own unique spin on it? Make it your own? The journalist that wrote the piece did just that. Why would a radio person be lazy and think that that was good enough. Well, possibly for that very reason: it’s just ‘good enough’. Not ‘good’, just ‘good enough’. Even if the expectations placed on you by your PD are low, there is no reason to plummet to that level. That presenter let himself down. He didn’t let the station down (they’re doing a pretty good job of that themselves, without his help). For the four hours on the air, he was the radio station. He could have made it sound like the market leader, just by raising his game. He could have related to me and been my friend and sounded the same as me. Instead he was just another ‘DJ’, going through the motions waiting to go home. In fact he said so: “I’ll be here until six o’clock”. He actually told us when he was quitting work. It was obviously on his mind. No matter the feed back or level of expectation – you be the best you can be. You give it all you can give it. Hey, if the station is performing poorly and you are performing brilliantly, just think how you will stand out! Your work rate will sound amazing compared to any lethargic co-workers that happen to be on the schedule. You will be the main person on the station. That presenter I listened to didn’t sound bothered and neither was I. I won’t be listening to him again.

Part Time DJ - Big Time Drama!
(Sunday October 07, 2007) Written by Mason
This blog was sparked off a comment I made in the forum. I said something along the lines of regardless of market size, if the gig paid enough for me to live there, have money on the side, then I'd be happy because money isn't really an issue, I just want to put something entertaining on the air! So with that said! Here we go with my first jockconference blog! Which also was inspired from my myspace blog! Since the start of September the guys at my station have really become more than just simply co-workers! Friends is a great way to put it! We hang out 2-3 times per week for several hours and that is just simply awesome!! And it couldn't of come at a more perfect time in my life as well. My marriage with my wife Denise is on the rocks bigtime! We are currently split up living in 2 different towns, (or at least to the best of my knowledge) Denise and I split in about early-september! I moved in with my mom and a few weeks later she was evicted from her apartment, which left me with 2 choices! Live on the streets or go back to my wife. I asked Denise if I could come back and she said yes! That was probably the worst "yes" I have ever heard in my life. THe next morning she asked me to leave (because she was going to work) I had barely any gas and nowhere to go! Here is where I get brutally honest! I was in panic mode! I had no place to stay, I had no place to go, and I had no money for gas so that I could simply drive around. I was scared and because of that I blew up and shoved my wife into the wall and apparently injured her wrist. I also shoved her into the couch and hurt her again. (*cries*) Here I am a person who is all about not being violent towards a lady and I go and screw up in that very same way! I ended up in Jail for 2 days and I now have to take anger management counseling! Since then the late nights have been awful for me. I'm not allowed to see my wife or kids for at least 60 days and I have a court appearence on October 16th to work the details on that out. Problem is that I have to travel about 170 miles for this court appearence and I don't really have the money for gas for this trip! I get paid from the station on the 15th. I have to pay my cell phone bill, but I'm just a part time DJ! I don't have any extra money to make trips like this! But don't get me wrong I love my kids and I'm trying to sort out hurtful feelings currently on if I have a desire in my heart to work out the marriage itself! My plans are to show up for that court appearence. Chris, Reed and myself go out alot. Drink, Party just whatever seems to pop up, we try to make plans to do it. Random or not random and hanging out for 3-7 hours per night (longer if we hit up an after party LOL) Definetly helps me But when it all comes down to it. I"m hurt, confused and lost! I've been staying in a motel, but I'm out of money and check out time is Sunday at 11am! Thankfully I'm on the air from 2pm-6pm on Sunday and it's possible that us guys will hang out for sometime after 6pm, but I know that at some point that evening/early morning I will be on the streets on my own! I don't know how many of you pray on a regular basis, but if you could toss in a few words for me the next time you do that would be awesome! I'm honestly not an evil person. I made a huge and regretful mistake! The fact that I'm all alone hurts so much! It's like I have no one to talk to in person. It's almost as if I need a replacement (probably bad wording) wether that'd be temporary or permanent is unknown! I go in spurts of crying and not cyring at random! I also want to say thanks to Chris for reading my emails and listening to me and calling and texting me showing his concern and for holding on to my gig while I was in jail! For all the drinks you have bought me. I couldn't possibly repay you at anytime soon! You are an awesome person and I appreciate that very much! Reed, you have been a great friend! You care and that's cool! You didn't laugh at me when you walked into the production room to see me crying! LOL For making my birthday the best it could have possibly been, and for all the other times you have picked me up a drink! I appreciate it! It's not too often that a part time jock has a huge paycheck! I felt bad because between the two of them, they have probably spend around $100 bucks on drinks simply for me over the last 3 weeks or so and all I've been able to payback/pitch-in was a stupid 2 dollars!!! Well I am getting tired so I think I will go home and sleep. I have to be on the air in 8 hours and 3 minutes from now! LOL If ANYONE has ANYTHING to say reagarding this blog, please feel free to do just that!! Thank you very much - Mike

Most Embarassing Moment!
(Wednesday June 13, 2007) Written by Rick Hall
One of the most common ice breaker questions is "describe your most embarrassing moment." No doubt about it, I updated my answer to that question this past weekend. Presenting Fish Fest: The Midwest's largest one day Christian music festival. Each Fish jock was assigned to an artist to introduce. It was my time. The stage manager handed me the mic and the spotlight was on me. With microphone in hand, I screamed "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, GIVE IT UP FOR SUPERCHICK!" But here's the thing ... my voice completely cracked as I screamed SUPERCHICK. It was heard by everyone! It was a total Peter Brady moment, in front of 1000's of Fish listeners! I think it's fair to say that my co-workers will never let me forget that night. - Rick Hall (Middays- The Fish, Milwaukee, WI)

Another week of shows
(Saturday May 19, 2007) Written by DougE
Just finished up another week of shows, and I decided to take some time out and examine them and see what I could do differently. Well, it could have been worse. My content was interesting, but I still stumbled on several of my deliveries. The confidence is there unlike when I started about 6 months ago. So I am improving, but I guess I'm just impatient. Something about the shows is lacking. They seem flat, but then again that could just be me being over critical. Or I could just be bored. Being in a small market, doesn't allow for cool prizes or interviews. The high light of my giveaways was a pair of tickets to our stations comedy club this weekend. Ticket sales were slow so the PD wanted me to give away a pair to try and jump start sales. I'm also handcuffed with the equipment. Our phone system is ancient and doesn't allow for good on-air calls, plus the PD doesn't want live calls on the air. I'm kinda tied down. The wife just started a good job and we bought a house a few months ago. Ok, so I guess I'll coast along until I can finally find a way to escape microtown USA.

Hello, I thought I'd introduce myself. I was a lurker on the previous incarnation of JC and at the time I was mostly just a fill-in-and-do-everything-else jock in a REALLY small market. Now though, I'm the afternoon guy on a classic hits station in a REALLY small market. I've been doing afternoons for 6 months and have been glad to have JC as a resource for listening to air checks from other areas and learning.

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson please go away!
(Saturday April 28, 2007) Written by KinKAID
I originally posted this blog on my myspace account www.myspace.com/chris_daniels about a week after the Don Imus controversy... Oh man, where do I even start with this one, after days and days of gathering information, I was forced to postpone this entry due to the tragic events at Virginia Tech. Obviously all our hearts and prayers are going out to the victims and their families, also we cannot forget about Seung Hiu's family either. This entry is not about the massacre however a lot of us are forgetting that he too had a family and to have a son do what Seung did must be the most horrific nightmare possible for a mother and father to have... On to the reason for my entry: Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson Before you ask NO I do not support these two in any amount. Zero, None, Nada, in fact Al Sharpton is in my opinion THE MOST RACIST person in the United States. In addition to that last statement, the fact that a great deal of people refer to him as "Reverand" is a joke. This man is NOT and SHOULD NOT be referred to as "Rev." I am about as much of a "Rev." as Sharpton. Should Imus have said what he said? No. Was the whole thing blown out of proportion due to two people who think they have to chime in when ANYTHING that even MIGHT be racist comes about? 100% HELL YES! If you haven't heard the audio of what Don Imus said the link is below, and I urge you please click on the link and listen to what cost Don Imus his job. Not to sound racist at all in fact those who know me know that I am probably one of the LEAST racist people you can find. I have many MANY black friends (that's not racist that's their skin color), played years and years of high school basketball and hell I am a personality on a "rap" station, but this entry is not about me. Let's examine what cost Imus his job. "Nappy" : Sharpton calls this a "racial slur" WRONG... nap·py 1(np) adj. nap·pi·er, nap·pi·est 1. Having a nap; fuzzy. 2. Kinky; frizzy. "Frizzy", I am pretty sure there were QUITE A FEW players on that team that had "frizzy" hair. As far as the rest of it, there is nothing REMOTELY close to being racial. "Ho's" however IS derogatory to women and should have landed Mr. Imus in hot water. Also I would like to state that I would NEVER use that slur to refer to women... but was it worthy of costing him his show? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Radio is a form of ENTERTAINMENT. If we or I or any jock says something that pisses you off, or that you agree with and you get heated enough to call in and voice your opinion then WE as a radio jock are DOING OUR JOB! It makes me kind of curious if I could just call for somebodies job like the two people it seems that we hear from EVERYDAY about SOMETHING ELSE. If somebody screws up my order at Taco Bell (which they do quite a bit, I don't like tomatoes or sauce or anything like that) anyway should THEY be fired too??? Maybe a poor example but you get the point. Also Sharpton says that "he is not racist" but that too is a lie. Where was his protest for this guy calling for the "extermination of white people off the face of the Earth"!?! I ask you Mr. and I use that prefix VERY loosely but where were you when Kamau said THAT? Also if you do not know about Sharpton's past it's quite interesting and I urge you to read the following from Larry Adler (an African American radio host, who feels the same about Sharpton as I do) Please keep in mind this is ONE of at LEAST 15 situations where Sharpton has been involved in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAWANA BRAWLY: 1987. Al Sharpton, during the infamous Tawana Brawley case, falsely accused a former assistant district attorney of raping and sodomizing Ms. Brawley. Young Tawana stated that white racists abducted, raped, and sodomized her, scrawling the initials "KKK" on her in human feces. A grand jury later found the entire incident a complete hoax. Most likely, Ms. Brawley, afraid of punishment for staying out too late, fabricated the entire story. This did not stop Reverend Al Sharpton, who accused Pagones an assistant district attorney, of the crime. "We stated openly that Steven Pagones did it. If we're lying, sue us, so we can go into court with you and prove you did it. Sue us—sue us right now." Pagones did. After receiving death threats, and threats against his child, Pagones sued Sharpton and two others for defamation. A jury unanimously concluded that Sharpton defamed Pagones, ordering Sharpton to pay $65,000 to Pagones. The Reverend promptly announced his intention not to pay. A couple years later, Sharpton's buddies passed the hat and paid off Sharpton's debt, which totaled $87,000 with interest and penalties. To this day, never having paid one penny of his own to Pagones, Sharpton refuses to apologize, "I did what I believed….They are asking me to grovel. They want black children to say they forced a black man coming out of the hard-core ghetto to his knees….Once you begin bending, it's 'did you bend today?' or 'I missed the apology, say it again.' Once you start compromising, you lose respect for yourself."- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you would like to read more on Sharpton's past you can read the writeup by Adler here http://www.larryelder.com/ascrimes.html If you would like to watch the speech that CSPAN AIRED of Kamau Kambon you can watch it here Kamau calling for the "extermination of white people" http://www.break.com/index/double_standard.html If you have not heard or would like to hear the "racial comments" from Don Imus and the apology issued you can watch it here http://youtube.com/watch?v=aaGnu0l8shs Finally Imus did made a mistake, but we are and he is only human, was this a mistake worthy of his job? This is a man that was IN THE MIDDLE OF A CHARITY FUNDRAISER which has raised more than $40 million since 1990 for good causes. The Radiothon had raised more than $1.3 million Thursday before Imus learned that he lost his job. "This may be our last Radiothon, so we need to raise about $100 million," Imus cracked at the start of the event. Jesse Jackson called the firing "a victory for public decency. No one should use the public airwaves to transmit racial or sexual degradation." Public Decency? Isn't that what the FCC is for? Don't you have a job? Why do we care what you think? Racial? NO it was not, sexist? I'll give you that one IF you give me the fact that there are MUCH MUCH worse things said about women on the radio than what Imus said. Also correct me if I'm wrong (thanks to a radio jock friend for this) but if i'm not mistaken, wasn't jesse jackson the very man who referred to new york city as 'hymietown'? Howard Stern called him out on it, pretty funny hearing him backpeddle trying to defend himself. Sharpton said: "He says he wants to be forgiven. I hope he continues in that process. But we cannot afford a precedent established that the airways can commercialize and mainstream sexism and racism." You know what on second thought I don't care what Sharpton said, he is a bigger hypocrite that ANYBODY he's ever gone after, and trust me folks he's gone after plenty, please do yourselves a favor, read the cases he has been a part of (link is above). One more thing here's a passage from the Book of Matthew (thanks to a radio jock friend to remain nameless for showing me this) "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:38:45 RSV) Guess the so called Rev missed that day of church. Sharpton is a racist. Put him behind closed doors and tell me he will admit he likes white people....never gonna happen. I understand that you may or may not agree with my opinion on this matter, but at the very least before you start slamming me and this entry at least get the facts. 54% of people in America are now saying he should have been fired. I am willing to bet maybe only 5%-10% of those people actually know the whole story.... Thank you for your time and I hope I enlighted you at least a little on the Don Imus subject, if you have time to comment I would love to know what you think on this matter.... K2 Oh and one more thing, just at the very CHANCE that Sharpton or Jackson or anybody affiliated with them reads this I'd LOVE to have either of you on my show, feel free to get in touch with me I'm here from 7p-Midnight every night and the number is even toll free 877-777-1025

Help Me Fight Cancer
(Tuesday April 24, 2007) Written by Adam Chandler
I would like to tell you about my wife Molly... On December 12, 2005 we came home from my company's Christmas party and while Molly was getting ready for bed, she thought she felt a lump in her right breast. After 20 minutes of re-examining the area, and asking my opinion[hell I'm a guy, rub some dirt on it and get on with the day] but trying to be a reassuring husband, I told her that she knew her body better than anyone, and if she felt uncomfortable, she should go to the doctor. A few days passed and she went in for an exam. It was a Saturday morning and I was working on the "Honey-Do" list for the townhouse that she had left for me. Hours went by and I was almost done with the list, the last thing to do was frame out the mirrors in the two bathrooms, stain the frames, and then mount them. 8 hours past. When she came home, she informed me that there was a lump and that women get them all of the time. She said the reason why her exam took so long was that her doctor wanted to make sure that she didn't miss anything. Three days past and Molly received a job offer from Country Insurance in their billing department. This news helped take our minds off of the pending test results and we went out to dinner to celebrate her new job. At dinner we laughed, talked about the future - when will we buy a house and start having kids, to taking long vacations instead of simply focusing on work. When we returned from dinner, Molly went to our neighbor's townhouse to tell them the good news about her new job... I went in and played the answering machine. The doctor had called and said that Molly could stop in the next day to go over her test results or, if she wanted to, Molly could call her at home because "she'd be up all night" and it would be fine for Molly to call. Not good. When Molly called her doctor, I could hear it in her voice - the news was not good. She had just lost her mother to cancer one-year ago and now she's being told that she has breast cancer at the age of 28. I was helpless. There was no way for me to protect my wife from the cancer and the only thing I could do was hold her as tight as I possibly could and be strong for her. On December 30, she went in and had a successful lumpectomy. In February of 2006, she started her chemotherapy treatments, 4-hour sessions every 3 weeks for eight weeks. Once that was done, she had 6-weeks of daily radiation treatment on her breast and under her right arm, where doctors removed several lymph nodes to see if the cancer had spread from the lump. Which it did. However, we caught the lump at an early stage, allowing the doctors to catch the cancer in the lymph nodes at an early stage. As our doctor put it: "The lymph node is like an M&M. As long as we catch the cancer within the chocolate center, before it breaks through the candy shell, we should be fine". It's been almost 15 months and Molly is cancer free. Her hair is growing back - curly and thick, while mine is thinning and falling out. It's long enough for her to style and she goes in for her check up in April to make sure she's still cancer free. The doctors say she'll need to do these check ups once every 6 months over the next year, then she'll just have to do them every 12 months. I would not wish what we went through on my worst enemy in high school and I would love to see the day we find a cure for this disease. Even though the doctors have said that there's only a 2% chance that the cancer may return, I'd feel a lot better if we were given a guarantee that the cancer would never return. So, until the day comes when we have a cure, I will be a part of Relay for Life - helping raise money to find a cure. Through Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, I have an on-line donation drive to raise funds for this years event. If you donate just $1.00 in my name, I will be $1.00 closer to my goal. Please feel free to visit the donation website: http://www.acsevents.org/relay/il/mclean/chandler

You Can Write a Jock Blog
(Monday April 23, 2007) Written by webmaster
I don't know if this is anything anyone will use but I figured it's a feature that some people might use. You can write whatever you want in here. If you want to bitch about something, do it. If there's a breaking story you want to give people the head's up on, post it here. People can also post comments on your blogs, if you want to let them. It's a setting you can set when you write a blog. It may be that people will just post the above mentioned stuff in the forums. If no one uses it, I'll just shut the "Jock Blogs" off. Figured I'd offer it for now. Now go look around the site some more and enjoy!
